The City of Taunton has made a concerted effort over the last five years to invest in road and sidewalk infastructure, appropriating over $15 million dollars for improvements. Main arterial roads like County St., Washington St., Bay St., Middleboro Ave and long needed sidewalk reconstruction projects like Shores St., Ingell St., First St., Weir St., have been able to move forward. With over 200 miles of City-accepted streets, sidewalks, and underground utilities, the City continues to work to address aging infastructure that is critical to the success of the community.
In addition, the City has pursued funding outlets through Massachusetts Department of Transportation, maximizing Chapter 90 funding and receiving Complete Streets and Shared Streets Grants to further enhance Taunton public ways. The City's most recent Complete Streets project allowed for full reconstruction of Weir St. and one of the Shared Streets grants afforded the City the means to install three decorative crosswalks and flashing beacons to enhance pedestrian safety and downtown accessibility along Main St.
Utilizing assessment tools and comparing road surface ratings maintained in the City's Pavement Management system along with continuous collaboration with City and community stakeholders, the City will continue to target and enhance public ways and address the needs of its residents.
